દેવણીને લાતૂર જિલ્લામાં દેવણી ગામ આસપાસના ખેડૂતો દ્વારા પસંદગીપૂર્વક ઉછેરવામાં આવી. જાતિ તેના ત્રણ કોટ પેટર્ન માટે પ્રખ્યાત છે, દરેક પેટા-સ્ટ્રેન ના નામ પર. તે ૧૯૯૦ ના દાયકામાં લગભગ અદૃશ્ય થઈ ગઈ; ઉદગીરમાં મહારાષ્ટ્ર પશુ અને મત્સ્ય વિજ્ઞાન યુનિવર્સિટી એક સંરક્ષણ કાર્યક્રમ ચલાવે છે જેણે વસ્તીને પુનઃનિર્માણ કરવામાં મદદ કરી છે.
