Monthly cost depends heavily on herd size and breed. A small gaushala with 20 indigenous cows typically costs ₹1–1.5 lakh/month including feed (₹4,000–6,000/cow), staff, vet, and overheads. Larger operations (100+ cows) may have lower per-cow costs due to bulk fodder procurement.
For indigenous breeds (Gir, Sahiwal, Kankrej), feed cost averages ₹3,500–6,000/month per cow including green fodder, dry fodder, and concentrate. Heat-tolerant breeds like Gir have lower vet bills which reduces total cost.
Most gaushalas target donations of ₹1,000–2,500 per cow per month from public donors. The remainder is covered by by-product revenue (dung, urine, milk if any) and institutional support.
