Why indigenous cow breeds matter
India is home to over 40 recognised indigenous cattle breeds, each adapted to a specific climate, soil and culture. These desi cows naturally produce A2 beta-casein milk — easier to digest than the A1 milk from European breeds — and thrive on coarse fodder, minimal vet intervention, and Indian summers that crossbred Holsteins struggle with.
Despite this, indigenous breeds account for less than 20% of India's commercial dairy herd. Many heritage breeds are now Endangered or Critical. Buying, adopting or supporting one is a direct act of conservation — keeping a genetic line alive that may not survive the next two decades without intervention.
